K. Rajeswara Rao holds a doctorate in Social Sciences, M. Phil in National Security, M.A. in Sociology, a degree in Basic Sciences and a PG in Journalism. He belongs to the Indian Administrative Service (Tripura Cadre) Batch of 1988, and is presently posted in NITI Aayog as Special Secretary in charge of various verticals and divisions including Managing Urbanisation (Urban Development) and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Skill Development, Labour and Employment, Health, Women and Child Development. 

He previously worked as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Mines, where he chaired the National Committee and drafted National Mineral Policy. He was Chief of National Urban Health Mission and prepared ground work and guidelines for the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana during 2014 and 2016
