Shanta Gokhale is a writer, translator, cultural critic and theatre historian. She writes in English and Marathi. She has published two novels in Marathi, "Rita Welinkar" and "Tya Varshi". Both won the Maharashtra State Award for the best novel of the year. The first novel has recently been adapted as a film, "Rita" by her daughter Renuka Shahane. Her play "Avinash" has been performed in the original Marathi and also in Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam and Assamese. Her book "Playwright at the Centre", published by Seagull Books, covers the history of Marathi theatre from 1843 to 1992. She has contributed a weekly column on culture to the Mumbai Mirror since 2006.
