JNNURM: An Opportunity for Environmentally Sustainable Urbanisation
- 01 December, 2012
- IGC Research on India
This project undertakes an analysis of the sustainability of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the largest chunk of public sector funding channeled into urban India till date. It sought to answer the following question: To what extent have considerations of environmental sustainability been incorporated (explicitly and implicitly) in the vision and programme design of JNNURM? To understand whether environmental sustainability has a place in JNNURM, the project examines the programme at multiple levels for sustainability markers, including a case study of Nanded, a JNNURM city in Maharashtra, to contextualise their enquiry.
