Tanvi Bhatkal is a Research Officer at the Overseas Development Institute in London. Prior to this she was an Economist at the IDFC Foundation in Mumbai, India. She has experience in development and policy research, with a focus on urbanisation and gender issues. She holds a B.A. in Economics (Honours in Economics and Political Science) from St Xavier’s College, University of Mumbai and an M.Sc. in Economics for Development from University of Oxford.

India’s urbanisation process has come to be characterised by haphazard growth of cities, the costs of which are borne disproportionately by the poor. This column analyses Ahmedabad’s urban policy over the past two decades and the impact on slum dwellers. While the city’s urbanisation process has traditionally been a rewarding collaboration between the local government and civil society, recent changes present a challenge to this legacy.
